The Derfner Judaica Museum will host a free talk on the occasion of the unveiling of Memory Object (1973), a recently conserved abstract sculpture by New York artist Stuart Edelson (b. Bronx, New York, 1944–d. New York, New York, 1995). Senior Curator Emily O'Leary will discuss Edelson's fascinating life as an artist, cultural worker, LGBTQ+ activist, novelist, playwright, and world traveler before his untimely death from AIDS. Family members of the artist will also be present and share their memories.
In 1993 the sculpture was exhibited in the Cannon Rotunda in the United States Capitol at the invitation of the important LGBTQ+ rights advocate, Congressman Tom Lantos. The exhibition was sponsored by Congressman Barney Frank, the most influential openly gay member of Congress at the time. Memory Object was donated to the Museum by the artist's sister, Marjorie M. Bolkin, and the artist's estate in 1997.
