Front Runners New York (FRNY) is New York City’s premier LGBT running and multisport club. Founded in 1979, the club has grown to over 700 members annually, representing one of the largest LGBT athletic clubs around the world.
For 38 years, FRNY has organized a 5-mile race to celebrate LGBT Pride and the ongoing movement toward equality, diversity, and inclusiveness. The race brings together thousands of folks from all over the world. The 2019 Front Runners New York LGBT Pride Run coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and set the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest pride charity run with 10,238 finishers.
As COVID-19 has ravaged our way of living, this year’s LGBT Pride Run, historically taking place in Central Park, has been transformed into a virtual 5-mile race.
Each year, a portion of race proceeds is donated to a beneficiary, and this year, FRNY has selected New Alternatives, a nonprofit focused on increasing the self-sufficiency of LGBT homeless youth by enabling them to transition out of the shelter system to stable adult lives (see below for further information on the nonprofit).

THE 2020 FRNY LGBT PRIDE RUN BENEFICIARY IS NEW ALTERNATIVES
Each year, Front Runners New York shares the proceeds from the race, raised from sponsors and donors, with a club-nominated charity. Over the past eight years, Front Runners New York has awarded more than $150,000 to a variety of LGBT-related, New York based organizations as the beneficiary of our annual Pride Run.
This year’s beneficiary, New Alternatives, provides long-term support, weekly case management, education services, life skills training, community-building recreational activities, opportunities for self-expression, and programs for HIV+ youth.
In an act of resilience, New Alternatives has adapted their programming to the changed landscape of COVID-19. Their staff has shifted focus towards remote counseling and case management, and has expanded its meal services to alleviate food insecurity--exacerbated by the pandemic--faced by the nonprofit’s youth. Since the onset of the pandemic, New Alternatives quickly mobilized to distribute and deliver hundreds of meals each week to all five boroughs along with hygiene supplies and clothing.
Organizations are submitted for consideration and voted on by the Front Runners New York membership. Through our 2019 vote, New Alternatives was selected as the 2020 recipient.
